According to a Facebook post shared by the New Jersey State Police, Michael Buchell and his partner Shane McClafferty were responding to a report of a distressed dog when they noticed unusual movement in the water.

That’s when they found an adorable (and very angry) little puppy struggling against the current and floating on what appeared to be a discarded piece of furniture, as shown in the bodycam footage.
While trying to reach him, the pup responded only with growls and fierce barking. He then jumped off the furniture and briefly disappeared underwater before being spotted again under a pier.
Buchell eventually managed to approach the area where the dog had taken shelter and tried to reassure him: “It’s okay, it’s okay… I’m trying to help.”
After a few attempts, he removed his reflective vest and threw it toward the puppy, wrapping him in the fabric. The pup didn’t take it well at first and began to struggle, but the vest helped protect the officer from bites.
The officers said the grumpy little pup, nicknamed Oscar after the famous grouch from Sesame Street, is estimated to be about one year old.
Using a rescue boat and a blanket, the team brought Oscar safely aboard a vessel, the police reported.
Oscar showed signs of fatigue and early-stage hypothermia, but after being warmed up and taken to the station, authorities confirmed he was in good condition.
Officer Buchell is now caring for Oscar until his owners are found or he is placed in a new home.
